Summertime, and the eco-livin' is easy. Now that the heat is building, it's the perfect time for our guide to sustainable summer practices. From body care to meals out-and-about, we've got all the tips you need for earth-friendly fun in the sun.
It's the pits

Do you associate summer with being your sweatiest, stinkiest self? Well, we can help with that - sustainably! Routine deodorant has the longest-lasting smell protection we've ever tried, and comes in a nifty glass jar that you can refill here at the shop. It's a deodorant paste, so you just take a little bit on your finger or an applicator and apply to your underarms. You'll be set for the day!
If you find yourself washing your hair more in the hot months and wishing it didn't come with a trail of plastic bottles, it's a great idea to refill with us! We have shampoo and conditioner that you can refill in person or order online. But here's something cool you may not have heard of: bar shampoo and conditioner! We especially love HiBAR and Dip. They are sustainably packaged and tend to last longer than their liquid counterparts. Plus, if you're doing some summer travel, solid products are way more convenient than liquid. Dip even makes these handy bamboo containers that serve as both draining dishes and travel cases!
Protect & repel

Wish your SPF were more SPF (Sustainable & Planet-Friendly)?
Just like with shampoo, if you want to move away from the plastic bottle cycle, you can come and refill with us! Our bulk sunscreen is a mineral sport sunscreen by All Good, made with reef-friendly ingredients. If you love a spray-on sunscreen, Bask Suncare makes a non-aerosol option that is paraben- and phthalate-free, in a recyclable aluminum can. For those seeking sun protection that can fit into their skincare routine, we love Mad Hippie's Daily Protective Serum, which is lightweight and provides 30+ SPF thanks to zinc oxide.
When it comes to keeping the bugs away, it's totally possible to be firm (toward the pests) but gentle (with the planet). Lovett Sundries insect repellent is all-natural and chemical-free, made with essential oils that create a way more pleasant summer scent than commercial bug sprays.
Sundays in the park

Of course you can pair a reusable straw with any receptacle you have, but we find the ultimate combo is mason jar + bamboo lid + stainless steel straw. If you're headed to a picnic, you can keep things low-waste by packing your food in reusable containers and pouches. Dalcini stainless steel food boxes and Stasher silicone bags are durable, BPA-free and dishwasher safe, so your snacks are in good hands and cleanup is a breeze. Bees wrap also provides flexible food storage that packs flat once you've finished whatever snacks you've brought with you! Plus, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate all your bits and bites.
Have questions about any of the products we mentioned, or want to share some of your sustainable summer hacks with us? We'd love to hear from you!
