Why should I compost?

Did you know food waste is a huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions? It's true!

When food waste and organic materials enter landfills, they get buried under other refuse. Instead of composting and turning into nutrient-rich super soil, something different happens. A bacteria that cant survive in the presence of oxygen becomes active and as it breaks down the organic material it creates methane. In fact, over half of methane emissions from landfills are a result of landfilled food waste. 

That's why we are so excited to offer another avenue for dealing with your compost: Bennett Compost  bucket swap at Ray's Reusables! 

Who is compost drop off good for?

There are so many areas in Philadelphia where it's difficult to compost, and we're really excited to make it easier.

This program is great if you:

• Don't have a community compost drop site near you
• Live in an apartment building and can't subscribe to Bennett Compost
• Don't need weekly or bi-weekly pick up
• Want to throw a zero-waste event or party and want a simple solution for your food waste
• Are just a really cute person generally (yeah, I know you are)

Here's how it works:

1. Collect your food scraps and other acceptable materials (below) in the bin of your choice. We have 2 gallon counter top containers from Bennett and re-purposed 5 gallon buckets from our soap deliveries, but any container up to 5 gallons works!
   
2. Empty your bucket into the bin in our alley (make sure you close it all the way after!)
   
3. Pay at the register. All done!

To ensure that this program is able to fund itself, keep things streamlined, and reduce burden on our staff, all drop offs up to 5 gallons are $5 irrespective of size. Thank you for your understanding :)
